In Denise's words:

I began practicing yoga a few decades ago for my own physical and emotional wellbeing while working full-time as an oncology nurse. At the time, I was also dealing with the upheaval of infertility treatments and yoga was a great stress relieving strategy.

In 2018, while enrolled in an integrative health and wellness clinical fellowship, I decided to also pursue a 200-hour yoga teacher training through Carrboro Yoga Company in Carrboro, NC. Shortly after completion, I began teaching a free weekly community class for those struggling with mental health illnesses. Additionally, I held a part-time position at the University of North Carolina Hospital (UNC Health) teaching weekly classes on several inpatient psychiatric units while also serving as a substitute yoga teacher for the UNC Cancer Center.

In the winter of 2025, I began working towards my 500-hour yoga teacher training after retiring from oncology nursing. While I will always have a passion for oncology nursing, I am delighted to move in the direction of offering oncology yoga classes, especially free classes as part of my training and certification through the Christina Phipps Foundation.

Yoga, breath-work, and meditation have been an essential part of my life for many years and have served as anchors while navigating many family health challenges. For students, my goal is to offer classes that are nurturing and emphasize self-compassion through gentle movement, guided meditation and relaxation breathing strategies. The hope is that classes will leave students feeling calm, connected, more balanced, and empowered to embrace life’s joys and challenges.
